I’m always on the lookout for new cozy potential around here and Outpath just crossed my radar. The game seems to have an interesting blend of themes that echo a Minecraft aesthetic with clicker/idle game elements.
The idea is that you start on a small island and expand upon the block. If you’ve ever played The Raft, then you’ll be familiar with the idea. (Minus the ever-present killer shark, thank goodness!) As you progress, you’ll be able to buy new islands and expand.
Outpath wants you to clickity-click those gains.
The clicker aspect comes in by way of getting resources. If you want a plant, that’s a few clicks. A tree may be a few more clicks, and so on.
If you’re thinking that sounds tedious, you’re not wrong. Which is why automation is a huge part of this game!
As they boast in their features list: “automate everything”. The automation means that there is an idle element to the game and I’m pretty excited about that.
I can’t tell by the video alone, but the automation seems to be a simple concept. If you ever got into the nitty gritty of Minecraft automation, then you’ll know that it gets confusing and overwhelming fast.
Thankfully, Outpath seems to have figured out how to bring the complexities of those systems and present them into a TL:DR format. For someone with a short fuse on tutorials, that’s gonna be a game-changer.
If only life had an idle mode.
It’s not just about gathering and expanding though. There are skills to level up and blueprints to unlock!
For such a simple concept, there seems to be quite a bit to do! And you’re not alone in this world! You have animals that spawn and you can even go fishing.
Despite boasting a day/night cycle, it appears that you don’t have to worry about things going bump in the night. Some people enjoy the element of having to fend off creepies from their base. But, personally, I enjoy the assurance that I’m not going to be ambushed.
I haven’t played Outpath, but from watching the video on Steam, the only big con that I can see immediately is the inventory system. When you open it up, everything comes up in an overlapping line and you have to sift through them to find what you’re looking for. I can see how that would get tedious and even annoying after a time, especially if you have a lot of items.
Overall, Outpath urges you to “expand and exploit” and that seems to be a perfect tagline. With several different islands, you’ll get the chance to expand beyond your original island and no doubt find several ways to “exploit” the environment.
