Pokémon Day, a way to celebrate the original Pokémon Red and Green‘s Japanese release, for Japan has now come and gone. But, here in the West, we’re still reeling from the all too short but incredibly sweet presentation left by the official Pokémon Presents. Not only did we get some great mobile news, but we also got our first tease of a game called Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
What is Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is another entry in the fantastic Pokémon Legends series of mainline games started with Pokémon Legends Arceus. In this entry, Z-A has a heavy focus on Lumiose City and the Kalos region from Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.
During the events of Pokémon Legends Arceus, you slowly see the progression of Jublife Village being built up as you follow the story. Pokémon Legends: Z-A could potentially expand on that concept, as the teaser has a heavy emphasis on the redevelopment of Lumiose City.
Based on the shape and design of the blueprints in the teaser, one can glean that the city you experience in Pokémon X and Y may potentially be the final outcome of this redevelopment project.
One important fact is that Zygarde, the legendary meant to complete the X (Xerneas), Y (Yveltal), and Z trio from the original outing, is likely to play a much larger role in this title. The logo makes this obviously clear, based on the colors and pattern of the “Z-A” in the Pokémon Legends: Z-A logo. Zygarde infamously got snubbed early and set aside once the next generation hit back in 2016.
Additionally, the name Pokémon Legends: Z-A could also potentially be referencing an odd, but forgotten character from the franchise, Az. During the events of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, Az is a constant presence until he’s revealed to be (9-year-old spoiler warning) the king from 3000 years ago, kept alive by the Infinity Energy from the Ultimate Weapon. The series can get weird sometimes.
The teaser also ends with a simple black screen and the Mega Evolution symbol. How the popular gimmick, originating in Pokémon X and Y will play into the game remains to be seen. But, fans are all rejoicing right now as Mega Evolution is a fan favorite.
We notoriously never got a Pokémon Z, as The Pokemon Company put a strict focus on their 20th anniversary with Pokémon Sun and Moon not long afterward. Now that the X and Y concepts and features have been left on ice for over a decade, it’s great to see the game out in 2025, just before Pokemon‘s 30th anniversary.
Aside from the Pokémon Legends: Z-A news, we also got a first look at Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket for mobile (a welcome surprise), and tons of events in the already existing Pokemon games to celebrate the anniversary of Pokemon.
