Getting ahead of the Steam Next Fest coming up, we decided to play quite a handful of demos and the natural starting point seemed to be What the Car?.
The graphics for What the Car? feel very much like you’re watching a cartoon and the humor doesn’t help to dissuade that comparison. In truth, I’m not sure if I’d call it racing, per se, but that’s one of the tags…and you do run around the racetrack.
You play as a seemingly normal car at first, but every time you start a new race, your car changes. At one point, the car had the iconic legs, but in the next race, it had 8 legs. On one track you could only hop around, but the following races feature jetpacks and umbrellas.
What the Car? brings a lot of freshness to the genre by creating different circumstances that your car abides by every single race. Your goal is to navigate these changes and get to the end.
Along the way, you’ll be met with obstacles, pitfalls, and even a few side routes that will likely lead to a collectible card you can grab.
What the Car? – Normal car or Eldritch horror…
With chaos guaranteed, you’re never going to find a dull moment in playing What the Car?. And, if you finish the game or want to try your hand at making your own, there’s a builder to make your own tracks. You can share them online and play tracks uploaded by other people as well!
Each level has a ranking system for how well you did by rewarding bronze, silver, or gold crowns. As best I can tell, gold is really only achievable by having the cleanest run you can manage and not barreling into things.
Fortunately, things aren’t timed, so you don’t have to worry about that. There are a lot of hidden things around, so you’re encouraged to go off the map where you can to find hidden treasures, meet new people, and solve some riddles.
I found the art design to be very inventive for this one. And I couldn’t help but be amused every time the race started and the newest features for the car were sung to me. Literally.
It’s a pretty good time, so I highly suggest downloading the demo for What the Car? for yourself and adding it to your wishlist if it proves to be a fun game. We’ll be covering a lot of the newer demos that come out for Steam Next Fest, so you can click here to see more from our demo tag.
