It’s been nearly seven years since the Nintendo Switch originally came out. Sure, we’ve had some updates in the Nintendo Switch OLED. But, today, Nintendo officially unveiled the Switch 2 in a “first-look trailer”, with more details coming this April.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is impending! What do we know so far?
After plenty of leaks and rumors swirling around, the Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be a powerful successor to the original. Today’s short tease showed what the Switch 2 looks like, how it connects the new era of joy-con controllers, and its backward compatibility. They also teased what appears to be a new game from an amazing franchise.
The Nintendo Switch 2 looks very similar to its predecessor, but more like a grown-up, adult version. It focuses on a sleeker matte black finish with a tinge of the joy-con blue and red. The edges seem more rounded than the Switch, which is most notable when the Switch 2 Dock is shown. There have been no additional details given about other color options or if the Switch 2 Dock will be compatible with the previous generation’s system.
You can also see how the joy-con controllers connect, which as the the rumors and leaks suggested, seem to be powered by magnets holding them in place. With controller stick drift problems plaguing the previous joy-con era, we’re waiting in anticipation to see if the new ones use the “hall effect” or not, which would remove the possibility of stick drift.
The only actual details given about the Nintendo Switch 2 were about its backward compatibility with Switch games, which we learned about back in November 2024. The good news here is that it’ll be fully compatible with both physical and digital games. So, you won’t need to worry about upgrading and leaving your library behind.
In an easy-to-miss moment, a Mario Kart game is shown in the teaser. However, the internet is already pointing out that the models of Mario and Donkey Kong shown may be more than meets the eye, as they’re different from the decade-old Mario Kart 8. Could we be getting a Mario Kart 9?
At the tail-end of the teaser, Nintendo gives a date for what appears to be a full trailer, April 2nd, 2025. You can check out the teaser on the official Nintendo YouTube channel.
