Instants is an adorable scrapbooking game with a puzzle element involved. You play as someone whose family comes to them for help in scrapbooking memories. You’ll get requests from multiple people in your family tree asking you to beautify a set of pictures from a favorite time period or specific memory.
Not only will you place the pictures down and decorate your spread with washi tape, stickers, writing, and backgrounds, but it’s up to you to figure out the order in which they were taken. You have some help from an unnamed kitty that serves as your guide.
From what I can tell, you need to place down at least 3-4 pictures before you get any indication as to whether they’re right or not. When you do this, a line will pop up between them that is either red, green, or yellow. This line will change colors between the pictures to indicate how right or wrong they are.
Green, obviously, means that the pictures are completely in the right order. Yellow means that they’re in the right succession of time, but there are pictures in between. And, red, of course, means that they’re not correct in that position in any way.
Sometimes, the pictures are quite obvious as to what configuration they go in like figuring out the order of pictures for children growing through the years or the start of a relationship. But, sometimes you just have to mix and match until you start finding the pattern.
From what I’ve seen in the demo, that’s all the gamification there is. Mostly, this is just a little game to play around with decorating. With each album you complete for a family member, you’ll open up more options for decoration in all the different mediums. Honestly, getting a chance to look at new stickers and washi tapes was my driving force when I was playing.
Put all your stickers in the bag this Instants. This is a stick-up!

There have been a few games that have tried to do the scrapbooking route with varying degrees of success like Sticky Business or Pieced Together. Instants is definitely sitting up near the top because of the fluidity of the controls and the amount of customization you have available to you.
Let’s use stickers as an example. When you place down a sticker, you can toggle it to be bigger or smaller and you can spin it 360° so that the orientation faces the direction you like. You can, also, move it forward or back, so if you have a picture and washi tape down, you can sandwich the sticker perfectly between the two or even place it behind the picture. Lastly, you can change the color. There are only a few colors available in the demo, but I’m sure there will be more in the full release.
Likewise, with the washi tape, you can do all the things I mentioned above, but you can adjust the size after you’ve put it down and you can pick how the end is cut for an added bit of decoration.
It’s a slow-paced game, but it’s bursting with crafty charm. The demo will be going live tomorrow, February 14th, so if you want to check out Instants for yourself, pop over to Steam and wishlist the game.
