Out and About is an adorable crafting and exploration game that will take you through nature to forage plants. Not only will you be able to craft things with your findings, but you’ll be able to learn about them as well!
Every plant that you see in Out and About correlates to a real-world plant. With over 100 plants and fungi in the game, you’ll be kept busy!
While the information is as accurate as it can be, you should always use caution with foraging. So, while this may be a fun way to round out your plant knowledge, it’s best to stick to a golden rule – if in doubt, leave it out.
When you come upon an unknown patch of plants, you can take a picture of it and receive cards that match. These cards will show a picture of the plant, give its name, and on the back, it will have an identifying checklist.
You’ll notice that these patches have two plants each and they’re very similar in look. This is where your attention to detail is important. While plants can look similar, they can be completely different and even poisonous.
That’s why it’s important to use the sorting tables that are scattered around so that you can put plants that are safe in the same pile and keep the unsafe plants separate.
Once you’ve foraged and sorted, you can cook recipes and remedies. There are over 150 recipes that are real and can be followed step-by-step if you’d like to recreate them outside of the game.
As you play Out and About, you’ll get to know your neighbors better and form friendships with them.

Personally, this whole game feels very Hobbit-y to me. You’re not plunked down in the hills, but the vibe of foraging for a close-knit and out-of-the-way community just screams Shire to me. Plus, the options for character customization reinforce that.
I mean, yeah, I might’ve given my little character wild-colored hair, but the pointed ears and overalls still lend to that vibe.
I’m pretty stoked to get my hands on the full release. This game feels very relaxing and like a great way to de-stress from the world.
If you want to give Out and About a try, you can check out the demo over on Steam. While you’re there, be sure to wishlist the game since that helps out the developer.
