It’s entirely possible you’ve never heard the term “Bullet Heaven” games, I know it was new to me until a year ago. Most likely, you know the term “Bullet Hell” and that genre represents chaos — unbridled, unfettered chaos. I can’t imagine a less cozy gaming experience, but hey, if that’s your cup of tea, more power to the stability of your mind and emotional state. I love that for you, but it certainly couldn’t be me.
So, when Bullet Heavens started coming across my radar, I was understandably suspicious. Could a game genre designed to throw everything at you including the kitchen sink be tempered? The short answer is yes.
Bullet Heavens still have chaos, they still throw everything at you. But, it feels like they’re better balanced to the player whether that’s through better upgrading systems or different gimmicks. You can’t really go into bullet heavens expecting not to die. You’re going to die, but you’re going to get better every time you come back.
I’ve since played several Bullet Heavens and I’m honestly surprised at how much I’ve enjoyed them and how much they’ve changed my opinion of this game genre. I’m still not getting within 10 feet of a Bullet Hell, but Bullet Heavens are welcome all day, every day.
Bullet Heaven Games

Cozy Space Survivors
Cozy Space Survivors is the game that put Bullet Heavens on the map for me. This game was a lot of fun and is a perfect intro to the genre. Your map stays the same, but the experience is different depending on the ship you choose to play with. Each ship has its own specs and as you fly through space you can find upgrades and take part in small quests. Not to mention, the graphics are adorable. – My Review
Gacha Fever
Gacha Fever takes the genre to the cutest, Japanese-inspired place. You play across a few maps and, like the previous recommendation, your fighter can change and have unique specs. However, you’re upgrading your weapons in this one. There are two elements to collecting, paying for upgrades and opening mystery capsules for new fighters. The monsters and the art style are so cute and vibrant. I enjoy playing this game when I need just a smaller gaming session. – My Review

Cast Out Colony
Admittedly, I haven’t played this one yet, but it did just release this month! Cast Out Colony seems to play the same way as the others where you can switch out your main character and upgrade your stats. However, the difference in this one is that you have city building involved. You can build and decorate your own colony. Doing so isn’t just for aesthetics either — by building it up, you’ll get bonuses to help you in your fights!
