The concept of cozy horror games just doesn’t compute, does it? Cozy and horror couldn’t be further from each other on the spectrum and yet, I find them delightful when they’re combined.
As a platinum member of the “Halloween is my whole personality” club, I thrive on the macabre. Unfortunately, I am baby and my heart can’t handle being chased. So, I can’t really enjoy diving into classic horror games.
If you’re like me and about as hardcore as Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls, then you may find the list below helpful in introducing horror themes into your cozy gaming experience.
This list spans anomaly spotting, visual novels, and puzzle exploration. So, there should be a little something for everyone to enjoy.
This is one of those rare times where I think we’ve reviewed everything and the lowest score among them is an 8. So, they’re all Comfy Cozy Certified.
3 Cozy Horror Games that aren’t so horrific

Exit 8
Spot the anomaly games have been around for a while now. But, near the beginning, Exit 8 came out and it’s the perfect game to dip your toes into. While there are spooky elements, you generally don’t get the feeling of being chased. There is a liminal quality to the hall you walk down that I find a bit more unsettling than the actual anomalies. So, it’s great for those who want the vibe of scary games without getting the jumpscares. – Our Review
Grunn
Grunn is, overall, an unscary game. There are ways to die and a few jumpscares, but once you’ve experienced them, you don’t really get that same initial scare even when you start a new life. The replayability on this is vast because there are several endings and scenarios to explore. It’s pretty fun to try and find every avenue that you can take while taking care of a garden over the weekend. – Our Review

Slay the Princess
Slay the Princess is a psychological horror in visual novel form. This means that while there are horror themes and depictions of body horror, there are no actual jumpscares. You may feel a creep factor from it, but I can’t really see anything that would be classified as “scary”. There are several endings, so you can play through many times to experience the different ways to not only slay the princess but to see what kind of horror she’ll turn into. – Our Review
