GUNNAR gaming glasses are always cozy, but these tokidoki Year of the Dragon frames are also adorable

GUNNAR makes some amazing glasses for gamers. But, their newest collaboration is top-tier: tokidoki. The tokidoki Year of the Dragon frames are some of the grooviest to come from GUNNAR in a long time.

Teaming up with tokidoki means you’re going to get vibrant colors and crazy designs in any case. The glasses’ temples offer a red and white swirl of color that, while going for a fierce dragon, almost captures a koi fish or carp in the color scheme. As it makes its way to the lenses, it widens out into big ole cat eye frames that invoke the look of a dragon’s face.

If you know the Chinese mythology of the Longmen (or Dragon’s Gate), it’s about carp that leap over a waterfall to become dragons. I’m unsure if that much thought went into the design choices, but it’s what immediately came to mind for my nerdy brain and it’s really fitting if so.

Looking at the tech specs for the GUNNAR tokidoki Year of the Dragon, though, I’m really impressed from the get-go.

These come with the usual high-quality lens technologies seen in their other offerings, including their G-Shield Premium lens coating to keep them anti-reflective and smudge resistant, as well as the blue blocking tech and 100% UV.

Call me a sucker, but I’m also a big fan of this pair’s flexible spring hinges and metal frame as someone that broke my very first pair of non-flexible, non-metal GUNNAR glasses years ago by being too rough. The hinge on these looks similar to my GUNNAR PPK glasses. If they’re half as good as those hinges, they’re going to be amazing.

But, this is a celebration of the Chinese Near Year. You aren’t just getting glasses, now, are you? Italian artist and tokidoki co-creator Simone Legno was personally involved in this project.

The accompanying microfiber pouch that all GUNNAR glasses come with, the beautiful microfiber cloth, and the awesomely scaley carrying case were all designed by the accomplished artist. He also had a hand in the design of the glasses themselves. And, let me say, from the images we can see, you’re getting some amazing detail and work with this set.

If you’re looking to get your hands on the GUNNAR tokidoki Year of the Dragon, they should be out soon for $115, which is pretty close to the pricing of most of their collab pairs.

I’ve been a big fan of the GUNNAR brand for quite a few years, and I’m digging this look. I have to admit that I don’t actually need glasses, but I wear computer gaming glasses quite a lot. While I’m more of a straight-laced glasses wearer (I currently have both the Enigma Onyx and PPK Heat Onyx, for comparison), these might not be best designed for my usual needs.
