Rusty’s Retirement has been consuming the edges of monitors of cozy gamers ever since it came out. But, as simple as the game is, there’s so much more to the game than just the first farm you have access to.
What types of farms can you get in Rusty’s Retirement?
At launch, there are five types of farms in Rusty’s Retirement. When you start the game, you get access to the first one, Open Range. The overarching quest it tells you is simple: Clear wasteland to reveal open plains.
In addition to Open Range, you can unlock four more farm types, each with different unlockables, challenges, and focuses.
- Flower Swamp: Build in between flowing ponds and rivers.
- Sandy Desert: Crops dry out if left unattended.
- Blossom Forest: Build in between blossoming cherry trees.
- Desert Oasis: A dry landscape with pools of water.
Aside from the farm type, you also can choose if the game runs at the bottom of your screen or on the side, which only affects how you view it. But, you can’t change any of this once you start your farm.
How to unlock the farms in Rusty’s Retirement
Unlocking the various additional farms is going to take some time on your part, but not a ton of effort technically. Just play the game.
As mentioned above, the first farm, Open Range, is full of junk. You need to clear it all out and there is a lot.
You’re going to spend a total of 142,000 scraps (the currency that looks like gold) to clear everything out. If you build your farm up, this should take roughly 48 real-time hours.
While you’re at it, you’ll likely get multiple of your achievements on this initial progress, such as the “Play for 48hrs” one.
After the initial unlock, you’ll need to do the same thing with each farm. So, expect to be working on this for a while. The good news is that once you get your bots going with automation, you can let them do their thing until the game needs you for various purposes and unlocks.
One important note is to make sure to “zoom out” in your settings. It starts you partially zoomed in and, unless you know to look, you may not realize you have so much additional space to work with.
You’ll see the first unlockable areas on each side of your initial farm, but zooming out all the way will offer four more to bulldoze. I wish I knew about this early on and this is crucial to unlocking additional farms.
But, wait! I realized most guides out there for this don’t mention an important aspect. as mentioned, it’s 142,000 scraps, but you might feel like you didn’t spend that much when you find the edge, right?
Zooming out isn’t enough for anyone with a normal 16:9 monitor. You still won’t see the absolute edge of your farm unless you scroll to it. To scroll, you need to right-click on your mouse and drag it in the direction you want to go. If you didn’t read the tiny instruction manual before you played like me, you’re welcome.
One final note: While you have to unlock each farm type in succession, the final two farm options, Blossom Forest and Desert Oasis, unlock at the same time after finishing the bulldozing for Sandy Desert.
