We generally get our official Nintendo news that comes directly from Japan in the wee hours of the morning here in the United States. Well, we finally got something of substance about the Nintendo Switch 2 and we’re going to hear more about it this year officially.
Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo, has offered a tiny look at 2024 and what we can expect. On May 7th, two posts on X appeared. Both of them said the same thing, except one was in Japanese and the other in English. The wording is slightly different between the posts, likely due to translation adjustments, but we will include them both here.
This is Furukawa, the president of Nintendo. We will be announcing the successor to the Switch during this fiscal year for the first time in nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch in March 2015. We will also be holding a Nintendo Direct in June to announce the Switch software lineup for the second half of 2024, but this will not include the successor model. Please do not misunderstand.
Here’s the English copy from the second post.
This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.
Nintendo Switch 2: Electric Boogaloo
This announcement, primarily, tells us two things.
- We now know when the next Nintendo Direct will be, which is June. It will focus on titles coming in the back half of 2024, but not include anything about the unannounced hardware.
- Whatever the successor to the Nintendo Switch will be is getting an official announcement during Nintendo’s fiscal year. Their fiscal year ends in March of next year.
This news doesn’t tell us much. But, it does set a stage for our expectations. With all of the rumors over the past year, it’s about time we find out some real, solid details about the Switch 2, or whatever it ends up being called. I’m still a fan of “Super Nintendo Switch”, personally.
You can check out both of the posts on Nintendo Japan’s official X/Twitter account.
