The first The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom trailer showed us a series of rifts that have popped up across the land stealing away people – Link included. As a result, our girl Zelda gets her day in the sun with a new fairy called Tri. Not only is Tri entirely different from Navi, but it grants Zelda the ability to use a weapon called the ‘Tri Rod’.
We learned that Zelda could duplicate items, otherwise known as echoes, and use them later. The original item stays intact, but you now have access to use this item going forward with the Tri Rod.
Not only can you place these items wherever you want, but you can stack them too. This makes maneuvering Hyrule an entirely different game and employs a new way of looking at your surroundings.
We learned that you can basically make an echo of everything, even monsters! Having them activated means that they will fight by your side. This is a huge boon for players who enjoy a more ranged playstyle over a melee one. No monster is the same, so having a wide range means that you have a bunch of options at your disposal.
So, what more could the new trailer tell us? Honestly, quite a bit. Echoes of Wisdom is proving to be a vast undertaking which means that everyone’s playthrough is going to be extremely different from each other.
Now, we know more about the abilities Zelda has with the Tri Rod. We, also, get to know more about the regions that we’ll be able to visit.
We’ll be cruising up on the Gerudo Desert, Jabul Waters with Sea and River Zora, and Eldin Volcano where Kakariko Village resides at its base, whereas Goron City sits at the top. We’ll, also, get to visit the Faron Wetlands where you’re likely to encounter a Deku Scrub.
Seems like we’ll be returning to some old favorites and finding new places to love.
The Echoes of Wisdom trailer shows a bit about a quest system where it tells us we can help people with great and small problems. So, it appears we’ll have our main questline as well as smaller side quests that will be sure to have squirrel-brained individuals, like myself, running off the beaten path. We’ll be able to keep track of these quests in our adventure log.
Thankfully, waypoints are returning in their own way in Echoes of Wisdom, so we don’t have to worry about running from one end of the map to the other. Though, even if we did… we have our own horse!
When you can make the echo of a carrot, you can pop it down on the ground to summon your fleet-footed companion. You can use this horse to jump small walls, fences, and even run over smaller enemies. In the trailer, we see a brown horse and a white one. So, it looks like we’ll be able to choose the color of our goodest boy/girl!
Making food is coming back by way of a smoothie. You’ll be able to blend up items that you find like Electro Apples or Floral Nectar to create different smoothies that give you unique effects. We don’t get anything more concrete on those.
What we do get, however, is some accessories! Also, it seems we have the ability to change into different clothing. The clothing portion seems to be full outfits that you likely have to unlock. But, the accessories are interesting. The trailer shows “Zora’s Flippers” which help Zelda to swim faster when she’s wearing them and “Zora’s Scale” which helps to hold your breath longer. We see a few others in the trailer that are no doubt just the tip of the accessory iceberg.
Shut up and take my rupees!
Perhaps the most exciting news is getting to see more of what the Tri Rod can do. Just like we can use the rod to make an echo of an item, we can also bind an item as well. The trailer shows a few different examples of how Bind is going to be incredibly helpful.
When things are bound to Zelda, they move parallel to her. So, if you need to move a boulder, she can move it simply by binding the object and walking in any direction where she and the boulder are able to move.
Bind is going to be invaluable since you can use it to unearth half-buried treasure, use it like a knock-back for enemies (sometimes right over an edge), and you can even use it in conjunction with your echos!
So, if you need to scale a tree, you can bind a spider monster echo and have it pull you up. Or, the one that I thought was clever, is using an echo as a shield, especially one that is prickly to the touch.
If you thought that was all, you’re in for a treat. Bind allows for something called “reverse bond” which means that she can bind to moving objects. If there’s a cavern that she needs to get across and a sliding object above, then she can reverse bond it to get across.
Additionally, we saw a small glimpse of Zelda attached to a bird in the first trailer flying around and we get more illumination on that in this trailer. She’s using bind to travel by sky and, like the spider I mentioned before, there are other monsters with unique ways of travel to benefit from!
This trailer has made me even more hype for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and I’m grateful that we don’t have to wait long to get our hands on this game. September 26th is going to be a magical day that’s both too far away and right within the grasp of our fingertips.
