It’s 2025 and people are still finding new and weird ways to play classic DOOM. This time around, you can enter a high-end art museum and look at art while sipping wine in DOOM: The Gallery Experience.
If you’re unfamiliar with how DOOM clones work, people use the engine and source code for the classic 1993 DOOM by id Software to make their own levels or full-blown games. This time around, a team-of-2 called SCUM DOG opted to give a classy, casual experience for Mr. Doomguy in DOOM: The Gallery Experience.
I’m a big fan of the “boomer shooter” genre, inspired by the original DOOM games, but they just aren’t always cozy for most people. But, in DOOM: The Gallery Experience, you find yourself wandering the exhibits of a classy art museum, drinking alcohol and eating cheese.
Instead of shotguns or BFGs, you sip a glass of wine as you wander the halls and look at the art. Everything on display is mildly interactive. It will tell you the name of the piece and the artist. But, if you click on the title of the piece, it will take you to the relevant page on The Met’s open-access website for that particular art to learn more. It’s all very similar to how The Forever Labyrinth by inkle and Google handled the art in their free art experience.

Within the museum, you can collect money on the ground that can be used in the gift shop, hors d’oeuvres to snack on, wine bottles to replenish your wine glass, and other forms of alcoholic and non-alcoholic liquids to sip. The wine doesn’t appear to do anything other than help you look as pretentious as possible while wandering the art gallery. But, that’s half the charm.
But, the gift shop has various art replicas and art museum merch to purchase with the found money. It appears there is a mini-achievement system in the form of medals as well, which are unlocked in various ways.
While DOOM: The Gallery Experience is generally played with a keyboard and mouse, it actually supports mobile devices and gamepads. So, if you want to rock this little experience on your Xbox controller, you can.
DOOM: The Gallery Experience is a completely free, parody experience that you can play directly on SCUM DOG’s website and through Newgrounds (hey kids, remember Newgrounds?). Or, via Itch.io, you can also play it or download the newest version for a desktop, offline experience. It does get updates and patches every so often as well to better the entire experience.
